The team eliminate Burgos CF with a 0-2 triumph
Valencia CF made their way safely through to the Copa del Rey quarter final stage with a 0-2 win in their Round of 16 match against Burgos CF. Rubo Iranzo and Umar Sadiq scored the goals for the team.
The game at El Plantio began sluggishly due to the rain-soaked pitch. The first real chance went to Burgos CF, but Stole Dimitrievski made a solid save from a Mollejo shot inside the penalty area.
A few minutes later, Valencia CF took the lead with a powerful header from Iranzo at the near post from an André Almeida corner. Carlos Corberán’s men dominated possession, but the muddy playing surface prevented them from creating an abundance of clear-cut chances in the Burgos CF penalty area.
Despite the away team’s control of the contest, Burgos CF nevertheless came close to scoring, threatening with a well-worked move in which Mateo headed over the crossbar. Moments later, Valencia CF created a great counter-attacking opportunity between Sadiq and Largie Ramazani, but they couldn't finish off the chance.
Just before the end of the first half, Valencia CF again moved towards goal with an attack down the right flank, inspired by the energetic and active Diego López and Iranzo, although they couldn't find a second goal for our side before the interval.
SECOND HALF
After the break, Corberán brought on Copete for César Tárrega in his only change. At the start of the second half, Diego López nearly scored Valencia CF's second goal with a great shot from outside the box, but it whistled wide of the target.
However, Sadiq did find the net to double the lead, making a clinical finish after a pass from Ramazani.
In the following minutes, a series of rough tackles from Burgos CF made the game a stop-start affair. Despite this, Valencia CF remained solid, but faced some tricky moments: In the 74th minute, Burgos almost pulled a goal back when Appin's shot struck the crossbar.
Shortly after, Dimitrievski made another excellent save from a header. Then, Copete made a crucial interception to stop a dangerous attack. With three minutes remaining, Arnaut Danjuma had a chance to score the team’s third goal, but Jesús made the save.
Valencia CF managed to keep a clean sheet and enter their name into the draw that will take place on Monday, January 19th at 1pm, to decide the quarter final pairings.
