From Mestalla to Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán: champions of the 2008 Copa del Rey who played for both Valencia CF and Sevilla FC
Carlos Marchena, Hedwiges Maduro, Éver Banega and Alexis Ruano wore both shirts during their careers
Valencia CF will face Sevilla FC this coming Saturday, March 21 at 21:00 at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium. It will be a historic clash and a fierce rivalry in LaLiga EA Sports.
This match also carries a special note: Carlos Marchena, Hedwiges Maduro, Éver Banega and Alexis Ruano were part of the Valencia CF squad that won the 2008 Copa del Rey, but they also played for Sevilla FC during their careers.
Marchena came through the youth ranks of the Seville-based club before reaching the first team, although in the early 2000s he moved to S.L. Benfica. The player from Las Cabezas de San Juan arrived at Valencia CF in 2001. With the Valencian side he became a club legend, playing nine seasons and winning five titles: La Liga 2001/02, La Liga 2003/04, 2004 UEFA Cup, 2004 UEFA Super Cup and the 2008 Copa del Rey.
Maduro made 139 appearances across the five seasons he defended the Valencia CF crest (2007–2012) and was part of the squad that won the 2008 Copa del Rey; with Sevilla FC he played from 2012 to 2014.
Other champions from that 2008 cup-winning side were Banega—who spent six seasons with Valencia CF (2007–2008 and 2009–2015)—and later won three UEFA Europa League titles with Sevilla FC; and Ruano, who wore the Valencia CF shirt for three seasons (2007–2008 to 2010–2011) and also played for the Andalusian side for two campaigns (2010–2012).
