Corberán: “We wanted to win for pride and to give the fans joy”
The Valencia CF coach speaks after the triumph at home to Athletic Club
The goalkeeper reflects on the win at home
Julen Agirrezabala was a standout for Valencia CF against Athletic Club, and was pleased to keep a clean sheet at Mestalla.
The win
The team needed a game like this, to be able to win at home in front of our fans and keep a clean sheet after a very, very tough week -both individually and collectively. Nobody likes to concede 6 goals. We showed that we are a competitive team and that we wanted to win today -and that is what happened.
The opposition
It was a tough game, and we had some tough opponents at the start of the season. These were a very competitive side, coming off a Champions League game. It was a hard-fought match, and after the red card, we found a few more chances. We were very sharp and very happy to take the three points.
His performance
Many teammates played very well, the team did a very good job and individually I'm happy to be able to keep a clean sheet after a very tough week. Besides the fact that nobody likes to concede 6 goals, I wasn't at my best the other day, and I'm very happy to be able to get the three points and keep a clean sheet.
Mestalla
It's a stadium that makes a lot of noise; you can really see how much they spur us on. We want it to continue like this, with that unity between the team and the fans. It's the best way to approach these games, and we can go far like this.
RCD Espanyol
It's another tough match, against opponents who have proven to be very good in these first matches. It's going to be tough. Tonight we have to savour this victory and then get to work tomorrow for that match.
