Corberán: "It's a painful result, because we went for the game"
The coach's post-match press conference
Valencia CF coach Carlos Corberán reflected on his side's loss to Real Betis at the Estadio de La Cartuja.
His assessment of the match
The result is very painful to take, because we came out with tremendous determination to win the game. As the minutes ticked by, there was a moment when the match was evenly balanced, and in those final minutes it seemed like it could end in a draw or go in either team's favour if they capitalised on a transition or a quick counter-attack. Unfortunately, it didn't go our way.
The penalty awarded to Real Betis
Copete cleared the ball and, after clearing it, steps on the opposition player. His foot had to come down somewhere. If it's planted before the clearance, it's a penalty. We interpret it as not being a penalty. The referee interpreted it differently. It was a decisive move.
Baptiste Santamaría
We are aware that there will always be things you get right, and things you get wrong, in football. We have no choice but to accept it because we all wanted what was best for the team. In that move, we didn't manage the final minutes well because we should have dropped back more to try and counter with Sadiq, Danjuma, and Diego López, and hurt them with transitions.
Counter-attacking play
It wasn't a matter of pushing forward in the final minutes, but of maintaining a competitive pace until the end. We faded; we couldn't maintain the momentum in the second half. We didn't defend well in the final minutes. In trying to press, we opened ourselves up, and the opposition took advantage. They managed to turn the game around.
Substitutions
The team were playing well; we started the second half well, then dropped back, and then recovered our shape.
The transfer market
The plan for this game didn't include the last substitution I had to make. The last change, requested by Copete, disrupted our plans. Otherwise, Ramazani would have had some playing time if that hadn't happened. There are still a few hours left in the transfer window. Valencia CF have strengthened our squad, and now it's time to work, improve our understanding together, and it's a shame we didn't get a better result today. Regarding Raba, one player had to be left off the squad list today and the decision was for it to be a player in a position where we have more alternatives, which was in the midfield.
