Valencia CF will play a friendly match against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at 8:30pm to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the historic German club.
Beyond their encounters on the pitch over the years, both clubs share an interesting historical connection. Valencia CF ambassador Ricardo Arias and Borussia Mönchengladbach president Rainer Bonhof played together for Valencia CF in the 1980s, winning two major titles: the 1979 Copa del Rey and the 1980 European Cup Winners' Cup.
"We finished the first round of penalties tied and were about to start the second. We were all terrified. I went to Alfredo and told him I was taking one. When I walked to midfield, Rainer asked me where I was going and told me not to take it. I was convinced, and I told him I would. I’ll remember that moment for the rest of my life."
Bonhof also shared his experiences in an exclusive VCF Media interview, reminiscing about his time in Valencia:
"That was a time of many changes, even in my mindset. I told myself and my wife that I had to learn Spanish as quickly as possible. By November, I walked into the locker room and jokingly warned everyone that I understood everything! I also remember when we won the Copa del Rey against FC Barcelona—the fans were incredible, they wouldn’t let us leave the pitch. The people celebrated with us, and it was an unforgettable moment."
This special friendly match will honor the long-standing history and friendship between both clubs, bringing back memories of legendary players and unforgettable moments.
