Rioja: “Jaume has been the most important player in Valencia CF’s season”

After the loss to Athletic Club, Luis Rioja shared his thoughts on the final home match of the season with VCF Media.

Analysis of the match

It was a very competitive game, one where intensity and competitiveness stood out—exactly the type of match Athletic Club like to play. I think the team performed well overall, although there were some misplaced balls. In the end, the result came down to a moment of brilliance. But I believe we were in the game the whole time. Unfortunately, it didn’t go our way. It’s a shame because we wanted to keep our chances alive until the final matchday. We just have to congratulate Athletic Club and keep working hard to finish the season in the best way possible.

Making Mestalla a fortress

We all know what a stronghold this stadium and this fanbase are. I think it has been one of our biggest advantages throughout the season -absolutely key. This was only the second game we’ve lost at home in the second half of the season. Mestalla has practically secured our survival after the way the first part of the season went. It was an extremely tough period, both on a sporting and emotional level. The team have managed to rise up thanks to the incredible support from our fans.

The strong second half of the season

I like to look at things with optimism, and I really believe in the power of hard work. There’s been a lot of effort behind the scenes. I think the team gave everything and were fully committed to achieving our goal. We even managed to dream of bigger things thanks to the tireless work of the squad and everyone involved -from the kitmen to the coaching staff and medical team. They’ve been a source of emotional support and have provided the energy we needed. Unfortunately, we didn’t quite make it to the final matchday with a real chance at Europe, but we fought until the end.

Farewells to Jaume and Mamardashvili

Giorgi has given a lot to this club over the past four years. He’s a top-level goalkeeper, one of the best in the world, and he has a great future ahead of him at a big club. As for Jaume Domènech—what can I say? I believe he has been the most important player this season, even though he didn’t play in LaLiga. When we only had 13 points in December, he was the most optimistic one of us, lifting us up every day and every match. His energy and positivity were a huge source of support to each and every one of us. I really see myself in him -his way of living, training, and competing is the kind of thing I admire and strive to emulate. He deserves all the recognition for his attitude, day in and day out. Not seeing him there next year, not having his words and gestures of encouragement, will be difficult.

Reflecting on his season

As I said earlier about the stadium and the fans -they push you and carry you through. I just try to do my part by working hard and making sacrifices. I’ve felt that my efforts have been appreciated, and I’m very grateful to the club and the fans for how they’ve welcomed and treated me throughout this season. It’s my first year here and there’s still one game left, but overall, on a personal level, I’m very happy to be here. My family and I feel really comfortable in Valencia, and I hope next season will be even better.
