MATCH REPORT | Late goals provide cruel defeat to Real Oviedo (1-2)

Valencia CF lose 1-2 at home after Danjuma's early opener

Valencia CF's rescheduled LALIGA EA SPORTS Matchday 7 game against Real Oviedo ended in disappointment for the team, as a lead that they had held almost the entire match was overturned by two late goals for the visitors. The game ended 1-2 at Mestalla.

The team started with great intensity, and opened the scoring four minutes in. Luis Rioja crossed danced back and forth with the ball on the right flank and delivered a cross towards the edge of the six-yard-box, where Arnaut Danjuma was waiting for a scissor kick shot into the net.

After making it 1-0, Valencia CF then came close to extending their lead with another shot from Danjuma in the box from a low cross from Gayà, which he was not able to convert.

Real Oviedo tried to halt Valencia CF's dynamic start with several aerial balls. A corner kick saw the ball reach Lucas Ahijado, who shot from outside the area with an effort that grazed the left post of Julen Agirrezabala's goal. A few minutes later, Gayà and César Tárrega's quick retreat prevented a one-on-one by Fede Viñas turning into a more dangerous opportunity.

Real Oviedo did have chances, and from one of these, Agirrezabala made a great stretch to keep the ball out.

After the interval, Real Oviedo made several attempts to get forward, although without any obvious danger being offered. Shortly after, Valencia CF tried to capitalise from a counterattack, as Rioja passed to Danjuma, and the Dutch forward burst into the box. He was unable to shoot cleanly after contact from a defender behind him, but a penalty was not awarded.

Valencia CF coach Corberán brought on Pepelu, Diego López, and Lucas Beltrán in search of an increased presence in attack.

Just past the hour mark, Danjuma again had a look on goal. Diego López saw his teammate’s run through the opposition defence and sent the ball to him, but the final shot went wide.

The offensive drive from the hosts was evident. After a corner, Mouctar Diakhaby earned a penalty when the ball caught the elbow of an opposing defender. From the resulting spot kick, Danjuma was denied by goalkeeper Escandell, who guessed the right way.

Despite the complete dominance, the second goal to seal the win was not forthcoming. Real Oviedo, in contrast, took advantage of their opportunity and, from a corner, with five minutes remaining, Ilic scored the equaliser.

The bad luck continued, and from the next move Oviedo scored their second goal, with Rondón making it 1-2 and leaving Valencia CF cruelly behind.

In the following minutes, Ilic was sent off for a second yellow card. Valencia CF continued to try until the end, but a comeback was unsuccessful.

Next up for Valencia CF is a visit to Girona FC at the Estadi de Montilivi on Saturday, October 4th at 4:15pm.
