One game away from matching home record
Valencia CF have another opportunity to bounce back this Wednesday when they take on Athletic Club. The team are determined to claim the three points, following two negative results and with the chance to match an historic home record. Undefeated all season at Mestalla in LaLiga action, they are just one game away from equalling their best unbeaten streak at home in a single season.
In the event of a win or a draw Valencia CF will reach seventeen games without a home loss in the domestic competition, just as they did in 1979/80. On that occasion, coached by Alfredo Di Stéfano and with players like Tendillo, Ricardo Arias, Sol, Subirats, Bonhof and Kempes in their ranks, they went the entire LaLiga campaign without suffering a defeat at home, culminating their streak with a 3-0 victory against Real Zaragoza through goals from Bonhof and Kempes (x2).
If Valencia CF manage to score points against Athletic Club, then they would have two more matches (against Real Valladolid and CD Leganés) to exceed the 1980 high water mark. Back then, the season consisted of 34 matchdays, 4 fewer than 2019/20.
Most importantly, the team are keen to keep up the pace with their rivals for European football next season, and claim a win against the Basque team.
