Jaume Costa: "A win can mark a change mentally and make you much more positive"

The fullback was in conversation with VCF Media Radio on Friday evening, ahead of the game against Osasuna

Jaume Costa was in conversation with VCF Media Radio on Friday after training, and the fullback was typically insightful and informative about all matters regarding the club’s recent return to action. The interview came a day after the controversial loss to Real Madrid, but Costa insists that the focus now is on a tough Sunday fixture against Osasuna.

“Osasuna are a side to watch out for, because they are very competitive, tough, strong, pressing and attacking. They have good players whom I know, and who play at a high level. They are going to make things very difficult. There is also the handicap of us not having our fans with us, which makes things a little harder. We're professionals though, and we have the adequate mentality to play at our best and take the three points,” said the fullback, who acknowledged that the resumption of LaLiga has not been too kind to Valencia CF.

“It's true that we have a dynamic going that isn't very good. However, those of us who've been in football for a long time know that this can change quickly. A win can mark a change mentally and make you much more positive -it can make you see things differently,” he commented.

“I don't think that there are any easy opponents in the Primera División. We've had frenetic seasons for many years: Every year there are surprise packages, teams whose level dips etc., but over 90 minutes every team makes it very difficult. In the end, we have had two games in which we have done things very well. We have to continue doing that, whilst also improving aspects in which we need to be more solid. We've got 9 exciting matchdays ahead, and if we do things well then we'll achieve our objectives.”

Inevitably, Costa was asked about Rodrigo’s disallowed goal at Valdebebas. He was philosophical and measured in his response.

“In a situation like this, there are always people who take it better or worse. I think that there are a lot of veterans in this team -competitive players who have been through these situations or worse. Obviously you spend a day or a couple of days sad about it, but the fixture list doesn't allow you to lick your wounds. I trust that the players have recovered and can train to the fullest so that in two days we can do our best and take the three points, which is our priority.”

As for Champions League aspirations, Costa still believes Valencia CF are in with a chance, despite recent setbacks.

“Until it is mathematically impossible, we have to fight for it,” he said. “This team have won the Copa del Rey and have winners in the squad, who showed last year that anything is possible until the end. This year we are also going to try to show that.

“I give my best every day, so that when I'm picked to play I can do the maximum for the club, for my teammates above all, and for the fans. That's what I'll do when it's my turn to play, and when the coach deems fit for that.”
