Anil Murthy: "Our priority is to strengthen and to continue improving"
Valencia CF president Anil Murthy talked to VCF Media on Wednesday, briefly addressing matters that have arisen over recent days.
Asked if the transfer window was being particularly active this winter, Mr. Murthy said that: "In reality there is always a lot of movement in the market, above all for Valencia CF as a club that have won the Copa del Rey and qualified for the Champions League the past two years in a row. We have a great, high level squad, so from last summer up until now there has been a lot of interest in several players; it's been almost the entire squad, an endless list.
"Our priority is to strengthen and to continue improving, but due to financial responsibility and viability -just like the large majority of clubs- we have to listen to offers. We all work together in the same way, looking for what it best for the club: Majority Shareholder Peter Lim, coach Albert Celades, Director of Football César Sánchez and I. It is difficult to improve a great squad, but there are two days of the transfer window remaining and together we want to do that.
He also sought to clarify quotes that had appeared in a feature by publication 'The Athletic', related to the working methods at the club, taken by the media to create controversy.
"That controversy makes no sense. A journalist came to write a feature and I had a conversation with him. It was not an interview. There are things from this conversation that were poorly transcribed, and others that were badly translated. In the Anglo-Saxon speaking world, the word 'funcionario' (literally 'employee' or 'civil servant' in English) is not perjorative -quite the opposite. For example, I was a 'funcionario' for 16 years of my professional life.
"We all need to work in tune with a project based on homegrown talent and the economic stability of the club. Nobody is above the interests of Valencia CF -not even the coach or the president. That is why I say that we should work as high ranked public servants, at the service of a common goal. I speak on a daily basis with Albert Celades, who is doing a great job, and there is complete harmony with him."
