Lucas Núñez: “Staying at Valencia CF is a privilege”

Interview with Lucas Núñez after renewing his contract with VCF Mestalla

At 19 years of age, Lucas Núñez is heading into his ninth season at the VCF Academy, a place he’s called home for most of his life. The midfielder from Alicante has just extended his contract with the Club in what has been a very special few days, having made his unofficial first-team debut in a preseason friendly.

Ninth season at the VCF Academy

“Staying here is a privilege,” Lucas Núñez told VCF Media. “I’ve spent many years playing for Valencia CF, and I feel at home here. Being given the chance to continue for more seasons is a real joy because I show up every day full of motivation, and hopefully I can one day fulfil my dream of making an official debut with the first team.”

His physical presence has grown noticeably since he joined the Academy at just 11 years old.

Progress on and off the pitch

“I’ve changed a lot over the years, especially after spending eight years at the Residence at the Ciudad Deportiva. I’ve matured a lot with the support of my teammates and the staff,” he explained. Lucas has also developed his game significantly over time.

“In my early years, I had a more attacking profile, playing as a number 10, but over the years I’ve become more of a number 8. Last season with VCF Mestalla, I also played as a holding midfielder. I can play both as a 6 or an 8 depending on what the coach needs. I’ve learned a lot from both Óscar Sánchez and Miguel Ángel Angulo last season.”

'Estreno' con el primer equipo

During this part of preseason, Lucas has been training with the first team under Carlos Corberán, and last Saturday he had the chance to play his first minutes with the senior squad in the friendly match against CD Castellón.

“Playing the other day for Valencia CF, even in a friendly, was a dream come true. For all of us at the VCF Academy, our goal is to reach the first team, and for me, it’s a privilege to train and share the day-to-day with professionals. Regardless of the result, I’m very happy to enjoy the experience and keep learning.”

Goals

That first-team experience has been a huge motivation for Lucas as he heads into a season full of ambition and opportunity.

“Our objective with VCF Mestalla is to match what we did last year and aim high, trying to reach the Play-Offs and fight for promotion to the Primera Federación. On a personal level, I want to play as many minutes as possible and, if I earn it, make my official debut with the first team. That would be a dream come true.”
