Valencia CF and the bat, a timeless story
The bat has been linked to Valencia CF since the beginning of its history. This chiropteran can be found for the Valencian Club on the Valencia CF crest, being a significant symbol of the Club and nicknaming it. Not only Valencia CF but the city of Valencia itself has been linked to this animal since the arrival of Jaume I in the 13th century. The city's coat of arms also bears the bat, as it was a fundamental part of the origins of the current city of Valencia.
In addition to the coat of arms, the centenary Camp de Mestalla stadium also integrates this animal in its infrastructure. Not only in the stands, but a curiosity of this Valencianista stadium is that its pillars resemble a bat.
Likewise, the beloved mascot of Valencia CF, AMUNT, is a tribute to this emblem of the bats for the 'che' entity. The mascot has also recently won the first edition of LaLiga de las Mascotas.
Valencia CF's mascot originated in 2001, the season of the UEFA Champions League final against Bayern Munich, which took place in San Siro (Milan). Its design has changed over time, although it is inspired by a bat and the Tasmanian devil.
The name 'AMUNT' has been built over the years and by the fans. AMUNT is a 'battle cry' characteristic of VCF.
The mascot is present in the various Valencia CF matches at Mestalla, in the finals, in the celebrations of the titles and in various events with children.
The bats are also the link between Valencia CF and Austin FC (Texas, USA), part of the MLS in the United States.
In the Texan city of Austin (United States), a thousand people gather every evening on the Congress Avenue Bridge to witness a tremendously extraordinary event. From March to October, almost a million bats swarm over the bridge in groups. Migrant bats live in Texas in the warmer months, arriving there from their winter homes in Mexico.
The bats roost in the concrete beams at the base of the bridge, as they have enough space and height to benefit from the warm weather.
