The Uruguay national team won the U-20 World Cup last night in Argentina. Among the players in the squad, a player trained at the VCF Academy, the centre-back Facu Gonzalez has been a starter in a team where he has shown great defensive strength leaving a clean sheet in six of the seven matches played.
Fourth season at the VCF Academy
Facu González has completed his fourth season at the VCF Academy where he arrived in July 2019. He excelled with VCF Juvenil A in División de Honor and quickly moved to VCF Mestalla.
A hapless knee injury sidelined him for several months, but this season he has been able to play the full season as a starter and central figure on the left side for the b team, sharing the centre-back pairing with either César Tárrega, Cristhian Mosquera or Rubén Iranzo.
In the national team
At 20 years of age, the Uruguayan centre-back has not stopped growing. He started the season featuring in the preseason with the Valencia CF first team and in September he had his first call-up with the Uruguay youth team which paved the way for first to the South American U-20 where he was crowned runner-up last February and later to this U-20 World Cup where Uruguay have won their first world crown at U21
