Torres and Guillamón win Under-19s European Championships with Spain
Ferran Torres and Hugo Guillamón became Under-19s European Champions with Spain on Saturday night, with the former scoring both goals in a 0-2 win over Portugal in the final. The pair thus helped the generation of 2000 to another trophy, replicating their Under-17s triumph of two years ago.
Spain dominated the game from the opening whistle, with both Valencia CF players in the starting lineup. Guillamón was a rock in defence and also showed his ability to bring the ball upfield, whilst Torres led the attack with his runs down the right.
Torres opened the scoring with an exquisite left footed volley on 34 minutes, off a cross from Bryan Gil, which demonstrated his versatile offensive talent and put Spain into the lead.
The second goal arrived just over a quarter of an hour later. This time, it was a ball from Gil to Miranda down the left which started the move, and the fullback sent it into the box. Torres was waiting once more, and converted with his left foot for a second time.
Torres would be taken off in the final moments of the game, in order to receive a rousing ovation from the travelling Spanish supporters. Spain are now the most successful country in history in European Championships, ahead of nearest rivals England, and the two Valencia CF players follow in the footsteps of David Silva, Raúl Albiol, Paco Alcácer, Juan Bernat, Salva Ruiz and Antonio Sivera.
