Thousands of fans celebrate the Centenary on the streets of Valencia
More than 9,000 Valencia CF fans took to the streets to celebrate the club's Centenary, marching through the city on Monday morning
The march, headed by VCF representatives including president Anil Murthy, began at Plaça de l’Afició outside Mestalla and ended at ‘Kilómetro 0’ in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, where the legendary Bar Torino founding place was located a century ago.
Fans of all ages shared the walk with an illustrious list of former players: Mario Alberto Kempes, Amedeo Carboni, Claudio López, Ricardo Arias, Juan Cruz Sol, Fernando Giner, Miguel Tendillo, Voro González, Saura, Angulo, Roberto Gil, Guillot, Paquito, Juan Sánchez, Serer, Jorge López, Fenoll, Arroyo, Cerveró, Felman, Robert Fernández and Balaguer, amongst others, were present, along with several representatives and former presidents.
Waiting at the final destination, Valencia's iconic town square, were more people with close ties to the club. First team coach Marcelino García Toral, captain Jaume Doménech and VCF Femenino captain Gio Carreras were there, along with some of the descendants of the founders of Valencia CF: Octavio Milego, Miguel Cot, Guillermo Medina, Francisco Gascó and Elvira Llorca read out the Constitutional Act that made official the creation of a club now 100 years old.
VCF President Anil Murthy addressed those present, saying that "On a day like today, in which Valencia CF are celebrating 100 years of existence, the first thing I want to do is congratulate Valencianistas around the world who share this Eternal Sentiment. We in charge of Valencia CF are always thinking about how to make the club even greater and more competitive, but today is a moment for looking back to the past and honouring those who made it possible to have such a great club. That's why we wanted to pay tribute to the founders who planted the seed 100 years ago for a club known around the world, with enviable success. We thank them for giving a name to the best club in the world. Amunt!"
Following the speech, a commemorative plaque was unveiled in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, soundtracked by the Valencia CF anthem.
