R.I.P. Bernardo ‘Españeta’ España (1938-2020)
Former Valencia CF kitman Bernardo España, better known as ‘Españeta,’ has passed away at the age of 82. The news of his death was announced by his family on Wednesday afternoon, leaving the club and Valencianistas in mourning.
A legendary figure at Mestalla and beyond, Españeta will be remembered as one of the most well-loved and popular figures in Valencia CF history.
Club ambassador Miguel Ángel Bossio was amongst those to pay tribute to the late kitman.
“He was an example for us to follow, showing how you can live life with happiness -whether you have a lot, little or nothing. Look at how many years he was here, and the players he was with. He was always optimistic, and it didn’t matter if something bad had happened. He didn’t just talk about it; he showed you with his attitude. It’s something that a footballer appreciates a lot,” said Bossio, who coincided with Españeta for many years.
“You won’t find a single player who will say that they had a problem with him. He never butted heads with anybody inside the dressing room. He was always in the right place, as part of hiss nature. He was beloved by everybody.”
Ricardo Arias joined in the tributes to a man with whom he spoke on a weekly basis, and with whom he worked for 16 seasons.
“If people who didn’t even know him loved him, then just imagine the players who spent so long by his side. This is a loss that we are really going to feel. The fans loved him and we adored him,” he told VCF Media.
“Españeta was somebody who always wanted the best for the club. He never turned down any request from the club. He was born to do his job, and he enjoyed it. We are going to give him the homage that he deserves, and the club are sure to support his family with whatever they might need.”
One of the current Valencia CF captains, José Luis Gayà, shared his sadness at the loss of Españeta.
“Today is a very sad day for all Valencianistas. A great man, Españeta, has left us. I want to send my condolences to all of his family. I only have good memories of him; he made us smile in any difficult moments, he was always joking and I'm sure that he will continue to cheer on his beloved Valencia CF from heaven,” he said.
“Above all, I remember when he would come out for the team presentation. He was always the last one out, and Mestalla would give him a standing ovation. I am sure that, wherever he, is he will continue to spur on Valencia CF.”
