Thierry Rendall plays again 322 days later
The Valencia CF full-back, recovered from his anterior cruciate ligament tear, returned to competition against FC Barcelona at the Estadi Johan Cruyff
José Luis Gayà has done his part to provide goals for Valencia CF in the Champions League, but is yet to have one attributed to him in Europe's top club competition. The fullback has even had deliveries off his foot find their way into the net... but had them given as own goals scored by opposition defenders.
That was the case again against LOSC Lille on Wednesday night. Gabriel Paulista sent a long ball upfield, Gayà stole the ball away from Çelik and broke into the box, crossing in and seeing his effort deflected in by Soumaoro to make it 2-1 to Valencia CF. The referee gave it as an own goal, repeating a situation from the 2015/16 edition of the Champions League.
That night, on October 20th, in the third game of the Group Stage, VCF were up against KAA Gent. Gayà sent in a shot off a rebound that ended up earning his side a 2-1 win, but the final touch came off opposition player Mitrovic.
Gayà will have to wait for his first goal in the Champions League, but his contribution continues to be vital for Valencia CF in the competition.
