Españeta to have Valencia street named after him
Legendary Valencia CF kit man Bernardo España Edo, AKA 'Españeta,' will have a street named after him next to the club's new stadium. The new 'Calle Españeta' will replace part of the current Calle de la Safor, adjoining Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas.
Valencia CF, together with the Valencia City Council, will hold an inauguration ceremony on Calle Españeta.
Layhoon Chan, president of Valencia CF, said after the announcement that “it is a source of great pride for the club, for the fans and for Valencia that as iconic a person as Españeta will have one of the streets in the city named after him. There is no better place to honour his memory than one of the streets closest to the new stadium, where soon we hope to enjoy the passion that characterised Españeta."
"Football usually generates idols on the pitch. Españeta was able to transcend that, leave his mark and earn the recognition of fans, players, coaches and employees for his tireless work for a club and for his values. He will always be a point of reference for Valencianistas and we share this joy with his family."
The Councilor for Heritage and Cultural Resources, Glòria Tello, stated that “our city will always be better if it doesn't forget those good people who have earned the affection of so many, and have been benchmarks for their humanity. For this reason, the initiative to name a street after Españeta is in line with these values which all of society should aspire to have."
On October 29th, 2020, the plenary session of the Valencia City Council approved to award a distinction to Españeta for a lifetime dedicated to sport. He was a kit man for València CF for more than 50 years.
Charo, Españeta's widow, was the guest of honour last Saturday at Mestalla for the game against Celta Vigo, accompanied by President Layhoon Chan, club ambassadors Ricardo Arias and Miguel Tendillo, and Glòria Tello.
