Cillessen: “Valencia CF are a big club with great history”
New signing Jasper Cillessen was officially presented on Tuesday, and gave his first press conference since joining the club. The goalkeeper, who arrives from FC Barcelona, talked to the media about the challenge ahead and his desire to move forward in his career.
What was the main motivation for your joining Valencia CF?
“Wanting to play. After three spectacular years at FC Barcelona, I wanted more. I’m here to play in LaLiga, in the Champions League… It’s a step up. Valencia CF are a big club with great history, and I’m happy to have come here.”
Are you looking forward to playing at Mestalla?
“Yes. Two years ago I played a Copa del Rey semifinal here, and I can’t wait to play here again. Mestalla is Mestalla: It’s a spectacular stadium where I want to play very soon. I’d play at Mestalla tomorrow if I could.”
Have you spoken to Marcelino? Has he told you that you are his first choice goalkeeper?
“Yes, I’ve spoken with him on the phone. As for who is his first choice, I’m here to play, like I was at FC Barcelona -it’s just that Ter Stegen was a little better (laughs). Now I’m here, and I’m going to do everything I can to play.”
How long had you known about Valencia CF’s interest in signing you?
“It wasn’t too long before. When I was on holiday I received a call from my agent, who told me everything. I didn’t want to hear about any interest from any team whilst I was away with the Dutch national team, because we had the UEFA Nations League final to play and that took priority. After that was over, I spoke to my agent, he filled me in on the situation, and here I am.”
Valencia CF have had some very good goalkeepers in their recent history, such as Cañizares, Alves and Neto. Does that add extra pressure?
“They are great goalkeepers. I like the pressure that this position provides, and that’s why I’m here. I’m a very laidback goalkeeper off the pitch, but on it the most important thing for me is winning. I’m here to help the team and the club.”
Are you ready for the challenge of helping the team concede fewer goals than the 35 from last year?
“Yes, of course. I had two seasons at Ajax in which I conceded 23 and 21 goals, respectively. Valencia CF have a good defence, and we want to lower the amount of goals conceded.”
Why did you decide to leave FC Barcelona?
“I’m 30 years old now, and after 3 years on the bench, I wanted to play regularly again. I also think that it’s better for the Dutch national team. I’m here to play.”
