Valencia CF president Anil Murthy took part in a meeting with the LaLiga clubs not invited to form part of the proposed European Super League project. In the meeting, the clubs expressed their unanimous rejection of the creation of this competition.
Following the meeting, Mr. Murthy participated in an international press conference with LaLiga president Javier Tebas and the other club representatives.
"We want to thank LaLiga and Javier Tebas for defending the interests of Spanish football and European football in general," he told the media.
"As I have expressed in different statements and interviews over the past few days, Valencia CF oppose the idea of a European Super League. We hope that those who have yet to come to their senses reconsider their position. This proposal has damaged football, and now we must focus on recoveiring from this together, in a responsible way.
Any improvement to European football competitions should follow the current format of collective decision making for the good of all clubs and their fans."
LaLiga met this Thursday with the 39 Spanish clubs that had not been invited to participate in the European Super League, to discuss the recent proposal for this format.
The clubs present, including Valencia CF, unanimously and vigorously rejected the plans to create this competition. All clubs strongly believe in sporting merit through the respective national leagues as the sole criterion for qualifying for international club competitions.
