On A Day Like Today: Otxotorena wins Zamora Trophy
One of Valencia CF’s signings for the 1988/89 season was goalkeeper José Manuel Otxotorena. Joining from Real Madrid, the goalkeeper accepted an offer from Arturo Tuzón, turning down offers from other clubs such as Sevilla FC and Real Sociedad. In his first season at Mestalla he was awarded the ‘Zamora Trophy' for best shot stopper in the league, with an average of 0.65 goals conceded per game.
Led by Víctor Espárrago, that Valencia CF side were strong defensively and well organised. They would reach third place in LaLiga, in addition to being the team with the joint fewest goals scored against them, level with FC Barcelona, letting in just 26.
During Otxotorena’s time, the goalkeeping coach role was not a common one. Espárrago liked to stay behind to take shots on goal and add to his keeper’s workout, as did fitness coach Modesto Turrén. Gradually, video footage study was included in the sessions, which especially helped him with saving penalties.
The Zamora trophy, which is currently on loan with the VCF Foundation travelling museum, was won by Otxotorena for his mere 25 goals conceded in the 38 games he played. It was the same figure as rival Zubizarreta, although in fewer minutes. Otxotorena is now the goalkeeping coach for both Valencia CF and the Spain national team.
