Samu Castillejo: “We only have words of gratitude for the fans”
This Saturday sees the return of LaLiga, as Valencia CF play on New Year's Eve against Villarreal CF. The team are working hard to pick up from where they left off, and Samu Castillejo previewed the game against his former club in an interview with VCF Media.
How are the team approaching the return to action after the World Cup?
We’ve been looking forward to getting back and competing, which is the important thing. We have prepared very well, with a good feeling in all the friendlies, and we are looking forward to Saturday. We have felt good about how we’ve played, besides the results, although they are still just friendlies. The football, the desire and the mentality of the team have been good at all times. It has been a break to recharge out batteries, to prepare for what is to come, to improve fitness and to improve tactical aspects -something that is more difficult during the season.
Will this game be a special incentive for you because of your past at Villarreal CF?
Yes. There will be a great atmosphere due to it being at the new stadium and the desire that the fans have to enjoy watching, after having not played at their stadium this season. I have many friends there, as for three years it was my home. I have very good memories and it will be a very nice game.
How are the team preparing to start in the best way possible?
Starting in the best way possible means winning, as that helps you to face everything that comes afterwards. We went into the break very well, beating Real Betis at home and playing very good football. That is what we have to get back to doing. We will play a game every three days and we are prepared for what is coming up. We have a squad with great players and we are looking forward to things. We have an incredible group, with the desire to fight every day. That mix of young players with veterans is a great group to work with. It is a pleasure to train with all my teammates.

What is the importance of Gattuso in the good dynamic of the team?
We all know how he is already. He is very much responsible for the group that has been created, beyond the football side, in which we are showing that we can play very well, he is a coach who takes great care of the personal side and makes everyone feel good.
How will the 800 Valencianistas at the La Cerámica help the team?
Our fans are incredible. We already saw that in the match against Nottingham Forest, with the supporters coming to see us in training, and now the 800 people who will come to Vila-Real on New Year's Eve. We only have words of gratitude for the fans, and we want them to enjoy themselves.
How do you assess your progress on an individual level at Valencia CF?
I came off a year in which I was playing less, and I’ve got back to competing and entering the dynamic of the team. I had a problem that kept me out for 20 days, but the five weeks we've had now have helped me to work and prepare well for the stretch that remains until the end of LaLiga in the best condition.
Are you happy at Valencia CF?
I’m delighted with the club and with the fans. I really wanted to return to Spain, and I already said that it was the place where I wanted to play. I hope that people are enjoying having me here, and we hope to give our fans a good season.
